The diagrams below illustrate the potential location of an ADU on a site. A description of each
scenario is provided and a “ ” or “ ” suggests whether the scenario is appropriate or
inappropriate to development in a specific Character Area. Additional design guidelines in the
Building Design section of this chapter provide more information about appropriate design of an
ADU.
One-Story Detached ADU at the Rear of Property
The ADU is located at the rear of the site, and
placed behind the primary structure. The ADU
is one-story.

Two-Story Detached ADU at the Rear of Property
The ADU is located at the rear of the site, and
placed fully behind the primary structure. The
ADU is two stories.

One-Story Detached ADU at the Rear and Side of Property
The ADU is located at the rear and side of the
site, and placed behind the primary structure.
However, the location of this ADU makes it
visible from the public realm. The ADU is one-
story and includes a one-car garage.
