            Mass and Scale

A building’s massing is established by the arrangement and volume of its basic
geometric components. These include the main building, wings and porches,
roof and foundation. A building’s form or shape can be simple or complex.

Scale refers to a building’s size in relationship to other buildings. The size
of a building is determined by its dimensions, including height, width and
depth. Door and window heights and the cornice reflect interior floor and
ceiling heights on the exterior of a building and should be proportional to
those interior spaces. New construction should be compatible with adjacent Design the massing of the new structure to

            exterior walls.

The mass and scale of new structures should relate to nearby historic
buildings so the older buildings are not visually diminished or overpowered,
New structures should also be designed to be large enough so they do not
look out of place with the historic context.
5.4 Design a building form to be compatible with the scale
of historic buildings in the district.

                   a. Design the front wall of a new structure to be similar in width
and height to traditional buildings in the district.
                   b. Size foundation and floor heights to appear similar to those of
                     nearby historic buildings.

                   d. Design the roof of a new building to reflect the roof pitch seen
                     on the neighboring historic buildings.

Design the roof of a new building to reflect the roof pitch seen on the neighboring historic buildings.
If a new building were to be constructed along this street in the College Heights Historic District, the
roof pitch should reflect the pitch of the neighboring roofs. (300 block of East Park)
