DOORS AND DOORWAYS
Entrances can be composed of several elements, including the door, transom,
sidelights and moldings. Doors and doorways help establish the character
of a building and compatibility with the surrounding district. Doors factor
into the solid-to-void ratio of a wall, so the size and scale of doors should be
considered. Doors and doorways should be designed and placed in a fashion
compatible with adjacent historic properties and the historic district.
5.12 Design a new door and doorway of a front entrance on
a new residential building to be compatible with the
historic context.
a. Place a door in a fashion that contributes to the traditional
rhythm of doors in the district.
b. Use a door material that blends well with surrounding historic
buildings. Wood or other materials used for doors on historic
properties is preferred.

in the College Heights Historic District shown above incorporate stoops that orient toward the street,
which should be a part of the design for new construction along this block, should it happen. (400
