Articulation
Design elements, including both horizontal and vertical
changes in materials, texture or wall plane that add interest
to the face of a building. Massing articulation is the way in
which a building is broken down into modules, sub-parts or
major elements, that provide a human sense of scale.
Character
The qualities and attributes of any structure, site, street or
area.
Character-Defining Feature
Visible, physical parts of a building that are key components
of the building. These could include the overall shape
of the building, the original materials, the evidence of
craftsmanship in design and construction, decorative details
and elements of the site.
Compatible
Existing or performing in harmonious, agreeable
combination with its surroundings.
Context
The setting in which a site, structure, street or district exists.
Façade
The exterior walls of a building.
Flush
To be placed even with, or in alignment with, the façade of a
structure.
Form
The shape and structure of a building.
Front-Loaded Garage
A garage that is placed at the front of the building and is
visible from the public realm. It may be flush with the front
façade, slightly recessed from the front façade or projecting
from the front façade of the structure.
