Appendix D: Glossary
The glossary below provides definitions for some of the terms that are used
in this design guidelines document. Ordinance 2104 also contains a glossary,
Section 200 titled “Definitions,” which should be referenced for additional
terminology.
Balusters
Vertical member, usually of wood, which supports the railing of a porch or
the handrail of a stairway
Balustrade
A railing or parapet consisting of a handrail on balusters, sometimes also
includes a bottom rail
Bottom Rail
The bottom member connecting the posts of a fence or a row of balusters
Bracket
A supporting member for a projecting element or shelf, sometimes in the
shape of an inverted L and sometimes as a solid piece or a triangular mass
Building Front
A building wall that faces a street
Column/Post
A vertical shaft or pillar that supports or appears to support a load
Decking
The floor of wooden construction
Dormer
A structure containing a window (or windows) that projects through a
pitched roof
Double-hung window
A window with two sashes that open and close by sliding up and down in a
cased frame
Eave
The part of a sloping roof that projects beyond a wall
Facade
The exterior face of a building, technically the front or principal face of a
building; usage has expanded it to encompass any elevations, e.g., the south
facade
