Flashing
Piece of metal, typically copper, used to cover a joint where a roof comes in
contact with a wall or chimney so that the joint is weather-tight
Gable
The vertical triangular piece of a wall at the end of a ridged roof, from the
level of the eaves to the summit
Glazing
Fitting glass into windows and doors
Hip Roof
A roof formed by four pitched roof surfaces
Muntin
Thin strip of wood used to hold panes of glass within a window
Newel Post
A post terminating the handrail of a stairway at top, bottom or on a landing.
Originally, the central pillar of a spiral staircase
Pilaster
A rectangular column or shallow pier attached to a wall; quite frequently
decoratively treated so as to repeat a classical column with a base, shaft and
capital.
Porte Cochere
A covered entrance or porch projecting far enough across a driveway or
entrance road so that automobiles, carriages or other wheeled vehicles may
easily pass through
Ridge
The horizontal line formed when two roof surfaces meet
Riser
The vertical surface of a step
Sash
The moveable framework containing the glass in a window
Sill
The lowest horizontal member in a frame or opening for a window or door.
Also, the lowest horizontal member in a framed wall or partition
Skirting
A baseboard or finishing board at junction of interior wall and floor
