APPROPRIATENESS OF PROPOSED NEW
CONSTRUCTION
Where a historic building is proposed to be demolished, the proposed design
of the replacement building should be considered prior to demolition to
ensure the new design is compatible with the design guidelines provided in
Chapter 3 of this document.
• Consider the future utilization of the site.
• If a development is proposed to replace a demolished historic
structure, determine that the proposed replacement structure
is consistent with the guidelines for new construction in historic
districts in Chapter 3 of this document.
FUTURE USE OF HISTORIC MATERIALS
The method in which a historic building will be demolished and the future
use of the historic building materials should be considered. Historic building
materials should be deconstructed in a sensitive way as to keep them as
intact as possible. These materials should be salvaged for future use on
historic buildings.
• Consider the method of deconstruction and the potential for
salvage.
• Transport salvaged materials to a site that collects the materials
and can help repurpose them for use on local or regional
historic buildings.
