LOCATING ENERGY GENERATING TECHNOLOGY ON A HISTORIC BUILDING
When locating energy-generating devices such as solar panels or wind turbines on a historic building, it is
important to consider the building’s significance as well as the visibility of the proposed location of the technology.

             EXISTING BUILDING
The two-story building illustrated » Gable roof end faces the street
to the right has a significant south- » Side of roof faces south
facing sloped roof area, ideal for the
             installation of solar panels.

             PREFERRED LOCATION
If the existing structure has a high » Panels are set back from the front
level of historic significance, the facade
surrounding context has many intact » Panels are flush with roof
historic buildings or the roof is
highly visible, solar panels should be
set back from the front facade and
             flush-mounted to the roof.

             ACCEPTABLE LOCATION
If the roof is highly visible and/or » Panels are set back from the eave,
site constraints restrict solar access, but closer to the front of the
it may be appropriate to locate building
flush-mounted solar panels towards » Panels are flush with the roof
the front facade. » Panels are subordinate to the roof
                                                                                     plane
