            Public Parks Needs Assessment

Needs assessment begins with consideration of benchmarks for park acreage relative to population. This is
followed by consideration of the geographic coverage of park service areas based on where various types of
parks are currently located across the community.
As discussed in the Growth Capacity section of this Plan, Grenada County had a Census 2020 population of
21,629 residents. The midpoint population projection for 2040, also provided in the Growth Capacity section,
anticipates the possibility of just over 30,000 residents by 2040 (30,076).

Population Implications for Park Acreage Needs

A common benchmark is for communities to have, on average, 5-6 acres of parkland per 1,000 residents. When
some communities aim to achieve a higher standard, a typical benchmark is 10-12 acres of parkland per 1,000
residents. The table below applies these benchmarks for evaluating the adequacy of existing public parkland in
Grenada County relative to the current and projected populations.
