Figure 8.13: Designing an Addition to a Historic Structure

An addition to a property in a local historic district, or noted as a designated or non-designated
historic resource shall comply with the following and should be clearly differentiated from the
original structure and be subordinately scaled as illustrated below.

Original Structure Birds Eye View Street View
         The one-and-a-half story bungalow
illustrated at the right is a
         contributing structure in a locally-
         designated historic district.

         One-Story Attached
         Addition

         The one-and-a-half story bungalow
illustrated at the right is a
         contributing structure in a locally-
         designated historic district.

         One and a Half Story
         Addition with Connector

         The one-and-a-half story addition
         illustrated at right is appropriate
because it is set back and clearly
         differentiated from the original
         structure with a connector.

         “Camelback” Style
         Rooftop Addition
         The roof-top addition illustrated
at right is appropriate because it
is substantially set back from the
         street.

         Inappropriate Two-Story
         Rooftop Addition

         The roof-top addition illustrated
         at right is inappropriate because
         it substantially alters the primary
         façade of the historic structure.

Note: most of these images are provided to represent acceptable form and site design, not levels
of acceptable architectural finish and articulation.
