Advocacy
Advocacy programs promote policies and plans that support his-
toric preservation. This includes lobbying for zoning codes that are
compatible with traditional development patterns in older neighbor-
hoods and supporting adoption of new incentives to maintain historic
structures. They also work to expand the base of preservation players
and engage partners in collaborative preservation programs.

Historic preservation efforts are often supported by private citizens
and non-profit organizations in a community. In some cases, historic
preservation is an organization’s primary mandate. Other organiza-
tions focus on activities that are not directly related to preservation,
but that do have a secondary relationship. Sometimes, these organi-
zations provide opportunities for new partnerships.
