College Heights Historic District
Designated on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic district
in 1995, and on the local register in 2017, the College Heights Historic
District is located northwest of the Penn State University campus. It is
roughly bound by Park Avenue to the south, Holmes Street to the east,
November Alley and Hillcrest Avenue to the north, and Franklin Street and
Fairway Road to the west. The district contains 274 contributing parcels,
which collectively represent a wide range of housing styles from the district’s
1875-1949 period of significance. Colonial Revival, Tudor Revival and
Bungalow/Craftsman are the most prominent architectural styles, which are
described further in Appendix B.
The College Heights Historic District is defined by many notable features
including:
• Tree-lined streets
• Homes oriented towards the street
• Consistent building setback from the street
• Large, landscaped front yards
• One- and two-story homes
• Front porches and stoops
• Pitched roof forms, often side gable
• Highly articulated front walls
• Variety of building materials including:
» Brick
» Wood
» Stone
• Variety of home sizes
• Variety of architectural styles
