Grenada County Build Better Together 2040 Plan
Bottom Line
It is wise for communities to think in terms of a range of potential growth rather than an absolute number given
the uncertainty of any small-area forecast that extends beyond a few years. It is assumed for the 2040 Plan that
Grenada County’s 2040 population will fall within a forecast range of 28,561 to 31,590 persons, which yields a
midpoint of 30,076.
As illustrated by the Midpoint projection line on the scenarios chart, the midpoint of a potential growth range to
assume for the 2040 Plan – between the Accelerated Growth projection and the higher Super Accelerated
projection – would put Grenada County’s population at 23,102 in 2025; 25,074 in 2030; 27,388 in 2035 and
30,076 in 2040. This would mean an additional 8,447 residents from 2020 and implies that Grenada County
could add the equivalent of 39% of its current population by 2040. Soon after 2025, the county would also
exceed its past population peak of 23,263 in Census 2000 – and would ultimately exceed that prior high point by
6,813 persons in 2040.
The newest available U.S. Census Bureau estimates for 2019 showed an average household size in Grenada
County of 2.41 persons for owner-occupied housing and 2.58 for renter-occupied housing. The 2019 data also
showed 64% owner-occupied and 36% renter‑occupied housing within the county. Combining these factors
yields a weighted average household size of 2.47 persons for Grenada County. Applying this weighted average
household size means that 3,420 additional housing units would be needed by 2040 to accommodate 8,447
added residents.
